Thomas Röthel - Untitled, 2016
Relief printing on handmade paper
92 x 68 cm

The artist Thomas Röthel (1969, Ansbach) is basically known for his works made of steel, which, despite the hardness of the material, appear as filigree sculptures. For some time now, the material paper has also exerted a certain fascination on him. Here completely new aspects arise in his oeuvre. The artist says about his works: "In the works on paper, views and breakthroughs through and into the multi-layered handmade paper are created. Energy and force meet the previously so pure, untouched surface - penetrate it, so that at the edges of the resulting "craters", connections, almost fusions of the paper are created. The individual layers become one unit."

Röthel's view of his works seems almost philosophical and shows once again how the artist can create a sensitive, artistic world from simple materials such as steel or paper.
