Hildebrand uses analog data carriers, such as video and audio cassettes as well as vinyl records, as material for his artworks. On the audio cassette that he used in „Küss mich zum Abschied“ he taped the Song „The same deep water as you“ from the british Pop Rock Band The Cure. The magnetic tape, which holds the song, is now silenced and integrated in his work. The title “Küss mich zum Abschied” references the first line of the song “Kiss me goodbye”.
Hildebrandt creates with his analog data carriers an aesthetic that carries on the aesthetic of the eighties and nineties: through the glossy, monochrome and minimalistic visuality but also by referencing pop-cultural classics from the music and film industry. In “Küss mich zum Abschied” The artist applied the tape vertically on the canvas, which evokes the association to static image noise from old televisions, as well as the atmospheric storms in old Noir motion pictures. In the referenced song from the Cure you continually hear rain and thunderstorm in the background. In this way the artist added a visual layer to the audio original by creating these references to the song. Or rather: by using the analog materialisation of this pop cultural piece, the artwork is much more a visual manifestation of the song, the music and the aesthetic of this time.
