Constantin Westchiloff - Auf dem Weg zum russischen Neujahrsfest, no year
Oil on canvas
59,6 x 72,8 cm
The oeuvre of the Russian-born artist Constantin Westchiloff (1878 - 1945) consists of a variety of subjects - from naval landscapes and harbour scenes to rural genre scenes - depicted in a individual painting style between impressionism and realism.
In 1898 Westchiloff began studying at the Russian Academy of Art in St. Petersburg as a student of Ilya Repin. After he left for Europe in 1922 to live in Italy and France, he emigrated to New York in 1935 where he spent his last years.
The Impressionist painting Auf dem Weg zum russischen Neujahrsfest can be dated to the artist's early phase, despite the fact that the artist didn't date his work. In the foreground the work shows four cheerfully tuned persons in richly decorated, folkloric garments.
