Antonio Marra - Bin jetzt ganz für Euch da, 2013
Acrylics on canvas
150 x 150 cm
In the work Bin jetzt ganz für Euch da, the artist Antonio Marra (*1959 Volturara Irpina, Italy) represents, depending on the position of the observer, a densely covered surface with leaves or a geometric ring. This juxtaposition, this duality, is a recurring tool in his paintings: Nature and exact geometry, often completely contrasting motifs face each other. What distinguishes Marra's works from other Optical Artists is the Impressionist aspect in his paintings. Between the resolving moments, in which one or the other motif is completely composed while being circumvented, the pictures float in a kind of vibrating state. The eye sees both the one and the other. Marra's works open up to the viewer through movement and thus challenge a dialogue. By bypassing them, the colours are combined to form compositions and dissolve into their flickering state again.
Antonio Marra is known for his specially developed painting technique, in which the paint is applied to a three-dimensional grooved grid. With the help of a comb he removes the vertical material of the painting ground, the resulting pyramid-shaped grooves thus serve him as a three-dimensional picture surface. His paintings thus consist of two picture surfaces, which only open up to the viewer when the painting is circled.
